Case Study: Clevertronics

(2000, Aquisition support and technology assessment)

Situation: In 2000, Anthony Todaro entered into negotiation with Clevertronics Pty Ltd, an Australian technology company specializing in power-line management systems, building automation and emergency lighting solutions, with a view to acquiring them. Todaro recognized that Clevertronics had a sound business case and the potential to dominate a fast-growing market. The piece of the puzzle that Todaro was lacking was an understanding of the technology, particularly its value, risks and potential.

Corangamite Role: Todaro engaged Corangamite to lead the technology due diligence. Corangamite's in-depth research of the power-line technology included evaluation of the market dimensions and assessment of the competitive and complementary products at the March 2000 CeBit trade show. Corangamite's report to Todaro summarized the research findings, identified the business risks associated with the technology and suggested mitigation strategies.

Results: Armed with a thorough understanding of the powerline management technology and its business implications, Todaro was able to confidently complete the acquisition of Clevertronics at an acceptable price.

Subsequent to the acquisition Clevertronics engaged Corangamite to prepare the Business Planning and Sales Management Report to present to the Board of Directors. As part of this activity, Corangamite has provided support to the CEO in the areas of marketing and sales management. Corangamite continues to provide advice to Clevertronics on the management of intellectual property and related issues.
